Don't feel bad if you have no idea what this is, we had to cycle back to its launch article to remember anything about the ‘Car Thing' from Spotify that was supposed to act as a means of controlling your Spotify playback whilst driving the car. With an RRP of $90, it always seemed like a device with an awfully specific task and a correspondingly expensive price tag when you consider that you can snag a wireless Android Auto dongle for the same price. If Spotify's Car Thing was something you meant to pick up but kept forgetting because you just remembered you wanted to order some car-thing, now is your chance.
In a statement issued to TechCrunch, a Spotify spokesperson said the follow:
“The goal of Spotify’s Car Thing exploration was to better understand in-car listening, and bring audio to a wider range of users and vehicles,” a spokesperson told TechCrunch. “Based on several factors, including product demand and supply chain issues, we have decided to stop further production of Car Thing units. Existing devices will perform as intended. This initiative has unlocked helpful learnings, and we remain focused on the car as an important place for audio.”
If the $90 price tag was what put you off from getting a Car Thing, you'll be glad to find out that it is now discounted to $50. Even better, once Spotify discontinues production, the Car Thing will continue to work as should so long as you are a Spotify Premium subscriber. Free users should skip this unless they plan on signing up for Premium.
