There is not much cleaning you can do on a packed schedule. Even if you think you're a superhero, chores may overwhelm you. A startup called Shift wants to ease that burden and clean your home for free as long as you let them record it. Those are terms most people may be hesitant to agree to, given how little privacy we already have left. Here's more.

Err… the catch isn't so great

AI startup company Shift launched this week with an offer for New York City residents. Book a cleaning with them and a vetted operator will visit your home wearing one of their devices.

The operator captured in several images online wears a white branded cap and polo shirt. The notable detail is a small camera device mounted directly on the front of the cap just above the brim. They'll clean your apartment without payment, then leave.

But not before using the camera to record the entire session. Specifically, they need data about how everyday people do tasks in real environments. Cleaning is among the most physically complex, data-rich tasks a robot could learn. Plus, every apartment is different.

Shift says anything personally identifiable in the recordings is anonymized before processing. Although they don't detail how that works, it's possible software blurs your face, documents, and any other identifying elements.

It's not really free now, is it?

Shift's X post calling for home volunteers has gone viral, with divided reactions. Some users have shown excitement to sign up, while others express how disturbing it is. While it's a clever venture, there is enough history from companies like Facebook, Google, and TikTok to know how opportunities end.

The common consensus in the replies says it plainly that “nothing is ever truly free”. The advertising industry is a business you do not want to feed with your home data because it's sensitive. It reveals your income level, your habits, your routines, what you own, how you live, and who you live with.

Hence, advertisers will use it to predict and influence your behavior. Although Shift guarantees that they won't be sharing collected data with anyone, you can never be too sure. One commenter puts it more bluntly that the replacement of physical labor does not start with robots, but with recordings like Shift's.

Here's how to get to the free cleaning service

Shift is currently offering early access to anyone who comments “shift” under the X post. You can also book free cleaning on their official website where you'll fill an electronic form with your details. It's a seven-page form requesting for your zip code, full name, phone number, email, full address, and cleaning instructions. You can also sign up to be a cleaner and get paid.

Interestingly, their website lists pretty much every household chore you can think of, including toilet cleaning, pantry organizing, laundry folding, toy pickup, trash removal, and general tidying. In fact, the more of a disaster zone your house is, the more challenging your environment for better data collection.

However, the cleaners are independent contractors, so they're allowed to decline specific tasks. If you're not home when they arrive, or if you refuse the service after they arrive at your location, you’ll pay. Shift doesn't say how much, but you can reschedule or cancel up to 24 hours before your appointment at no charge. Cancel within 24 hours attracts a fee.
