When temperatures rise, kicking back with a breezy, fast-paced series is hard to beat after work. But finding one that sidesteps sexist tropes and problematic romances? That can be a challenge in today’s crowded streaming catalogs.

Retro Romance Meets Gen Z Freshness: Meet Off Campus

This year, a hotly anticipated literary adaptation hit Prime Video and pulled off something rare: it blends the cozy nostalgia of classic romantic comedies with a modern, relatable look at growing up. The result is a cultural sensation that soared to number one in France, winning over viewers with its huge dose of feel-good energy.

The show? Off Campus. This American series premiered globally on Prime Video on May 13, 2026. Developed by showrunner Louisa Levy and Gina Fattore for Amazon MGM Studios and Temple Hill Entertainment, the project was initially announced in 2024. It's based on the bestselling series by Canadian author Elle Kennedy, which ran from 2015 to 2021.

A Deal, a Hockey Team, and No Toxic Masculinity

The first season—eight episodes, rated 16+—follows the intertwined stories of the Briar University Hawks, a fictional collegiate hockey team. The story opens with an unlikely pact: music student Hannah Wells, played by Ella Bright, helps team captain Garrett Graham (Belmont Cameli) boost his grades and stay on the ice, while Garrett pretends to be her boyfriend so she can catch the eye of the singer she likes.

The show’s debut season was filmed in Vancouver, Canada, from June 9 to October 2, 2025. Vancouver stands in for the energetic bustle of college life. Amazon backed the show early: it renewed Off Campus for a second season in February 2026, three months before its premiere. Production teams were set to return to Canada June 1 for filming, reportedly continuing through September 2026.

Audience and Critical Buzz

Feedback has been outstanding. On the French review site Allociné, Off Campus earned an average rating of 4.1 out of 5, based on 169 verified ratings. Fans rave about the familiar vibe of retro teen dramas, but with none of the dated, problematic “boys will be boys” attitudes. Here, male characters openly talk about their feelings and support each other—especially John Logan, played by Antonio Cipriano.

Many viewers, especially women, call the series highly “addictive” and fun, with a carefully curated soundtrack where music matters. Secondary characters like John Tucker (Jalen Thomas Brooks) and Allie Hayes (Mika Abdalla) get real storylines and development. Looking ahead, season two’s cast already includes new faces, such as India Fowler and Phillipa Soo.

A Refreshingly Modern Romance—But Not for Everyone

If stories about American college campuses, popular athletes, and the classic fake-dating trope aren’t your thing, Off Campus won’t convert you. But I genuinely love seeing a mainstream show ditch toxic masculinity with such an effortless touch. It’s just excellent.

I cover everything that adds color to life—from travel to books, culture, great food, wellness, and more. My purpose: to bring you info worth knowing and leave you smiling with every article.
