The Pixel Fold 2 Will Have Bigger Screens Inside And Out

The Google Pixel Fold was the search giant’s first attempt at a foldable smartphone. It was good, but it could be better, and bigger screens seem to be the first step Google is taking to improve the Pixel Fold 2.

Google offers what is likely the best software experience you can get with an Android device when you buy anything “Pixel”. It's not surprising considering that they are the brains behind Android itself, and having control over the hardware as well makes the synergy between the phone and its software even stronger.

The Pixel Fold was a particularly exciting smartphone, not just because of excellent software but because it was the first foldable from the tech giant, and we're glad to know they're working on a sequel to it. An early report suggests that the Fold 2 will change quite a bit, with bigger displays on the cover and inside.

A Leak Suggests The Pixel Fold 2 Will Have A Bigger Cover And Inner Display

There's no major smartphone release I can think of that doesn't have to contend with numerous leaks leading up to its eventual launch. As is now essentially tradition, we've gotten yet another leak on the Google Pixel Fold 2, courtesy of tipster Ross Young on X. He says that the device will upgrade to a 6.29-inch cover display and an 8.02-inch inner display.

This is an upgrade on both counts over the first Google Pixel Fold, which had a 5.8-inch cover display and a 7.6-inch inner display. Of course, this is the first report of its kind, so it is best to take it with a sprinkle of salt. If true, though, it means that the phone will either get a lot bigger or a little bigger while being very aggressive with reducing the bezels.

Either way, the appeal of a foldable is in being able to pack a bigger display on the inside, so if this ends up being a valid leak, I don't think most of us will have much to complain about. It'd end up having one of the biggest inner displays on a foldable, if true (the Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 is marginally larger, at 8.03″).

Besides Bigger Screens, The Pixel Fold 2 Looks Set For A New Design

A hands-on image of the Google Pixel Fold 2 was leaked last month, and it showed that Google might be considering a very different design for its second foldable device. That'd be unsurprising, as most companies drastically refine their foldables on the second attempt.

The most noticeable change is the deletion of the iconic camera visor. Instead, it'll get a nearly square rectangle in the upper corner of the back panel, housing cameras in two rows, a flash, and a microphone. We can also see that the phone will opt for a new design that covers up the foldable's spine when it is opened completely, which is the latest design trend most foldables are opting for now.

I'll pass judgment on this design when I see the production version, but I'll admit I was a big fan of the visor design.

When Can We Expect The Google Pixel Fold 2 To Launch?

The Google Pixel Fold was announced in May of 2023 at Google I/O 2023. While we might expect the same fate for the Google Pixel Fold 2, some reports state that Google would rather put its upcoming Tensor G4 chip in it than the Tensor G3.

If this is the case, the Pixel Fold 2 may launch much later, likely in the Fall months. Whether it would launch alongside the Pixel 9 series isn't certain, but I think waiting a few months for a brand-new chip would be worth it.
