If you're on one of T-Mobile's newer plans, your next bill will be a little higher, even though your plan price hasn't changed. On October 12, T-Mobile raised its Regulatory Programs & Telco Recovery Fee from $4.49 to $5.49 per phone line, the second increase this year. Here's what it costs, who pays it, where to find it and what you can actually do about it.

What Changed on October 12

According to T-Mobile's own support page, the fee now costs $5.49 per voice line each month, up from $4.49. Mobile internet lines, such as tablets, go from $2.10 to $2.60.

This is the third bump in about 18 months. The fee rose from $3.49 to $3.99 per line in April 2025, then to $4.49 in January 2026, Android Headlines reported. That's $2 more per line than at the start of 2025.

Despite the name, this isn't a government charge. T-Mobile says the fee “is not a government tax or imposed by the government.” The company keeps it to cover costs such as E911 and number portability mandates, plus the charges other carriers bill T-Mobile for delivering calls to their customers.

What It Costs a Typical Family

The $1 increase looks small on one line, but it adds up fast on a family plan:

  • A four-line account pays $4 more per month from this increase alone.
  • The fee now totals $21.96 a month on those four lines.
  • Compared with early 2025, that same family pays $8 more per month, Android Authority calculated. That's $96 more a year.

Larger accounts feel it even more. A 12-line plan gets a $12 monthly increase from this round, according to TMO Report.

Who Has to Pay It

The increase applies to plans where taxes and fees are billed on top of the plan price. That includes the Experience plans T-Mobile introduced in 2025, which brought separate fees back after years of taxes-included pricing.

Older plans that include taxes and fees in the price, such as most ONE and Go5G plans, aren't affected for now, TMO Report noted.

What about T-Mobile's price lock? It doesn't help here. The fee sits outside your core plan price, so the increase applies even if you have a five-year price guarantee, Android Authority pointed out.

How to Find the Fee on Your Bill

T-Mobile lists the fee on your bill rather than in your plan price. To check it:

  1. Log in to your T-Mobile account.
  2. Open Bill details.
  3. Select Download PDF to get your summary or detailed bill.
  4. Look for the Regulatory Programs & Telco Recovery Fee.

Your first bill after October 12 should show the new amount.

What You Can Actually Do

There's no way to opt out of the fee on a plan that charges it. But a few things are worth knowing.

If you're still on an older plan with taxes and fees included, keep that in mind before switching. Moving to a newer plan means this fee, and any future increases to it, will show up on your bill.

If you're shopping for a new plan, at T-Mobile or anywhere else, compare the monthly price after taxes and fees, not the advertised plan price. That's the number you'll actually pay.

And keep an eye on your bill. This fee has gone up three times since April 2025, and nothing in your price guarantee stops it from rising again.
