I must hand it to Lenovo, for all the many issues and shortcomings their Moto phones have had, especially when it comes to updates, it appears they will actually continue supporting their ‘Moto Mods' on their upcoming Moto Z4 Play.

Lenovo debuted their line of semi-modular phones back in 2016, with the introduction of the well-reviewed Moto Z and Moto Z Force. Unlike LG's attempt at modularity earlier that year, with the utter flop that was the LG G5 which required powering off and painfully extracting modules from the bottom of the phone, the new Z-series featured magnetic connective pads on the phone's back which allowed easy and live Moto Mod attachment. This design did require subsequent phones to maintain the exact same shape and size, however, Lenovo promised they would support the Moto Mods ecosystem for at least two years.

A year later (and after releasing a cheaper Moto Z Play later in 2016) Lenovo retained Moto Mods compatibility for the next iteration of phones with the release of the good Moto Z2 Play, and the alright Moto Z2 Force. However, the mandated design for both phones held them back in the near-bezelless age.

When releasing such a throwaway device like the Moto Z3 Play in 2018, though, it seemed Lenovo simply wanted to satisfy their promise of Moto Mods for two years (and claim to be the first phone to support 5G as they promised to release a 5G mod in 2019) as easily and cheaply as possible. It's surprising, then, to see that Lenovo may actually continue supporting the same Moto Mods ecosystem through 2019 with the Moto Z4 Play, as today's leaked renders reveal. The fact that Lenovo's entire 2018 Moto lineup was accurately leaked at the beginning of last year makes this leak very plausible, though this will obviously be welcome news for those Moto Mod enthusiasts out there.

For the most part, the phone actually seems to have finally adopted a fairly modern frontal design as well – with a low-bezel screen, and a tiny waterdrop notch, though the rear is, of course, identical to the phone's predecessors. The renders also claim the return of the 3.5mm headphone jack, missing from previous Z phones.

No other specific specifications were revealed, other than the fact it will sport only a single camera on each side – possibly hinting the Z4 Play will again be a budget device like it's ‘Play' forebears. Thus I'd expect 6GB RAM, 64GB ROM, and hopefully a Snapdragon 600 series CPU.

All-in-all, the Z4 Play shows at least some improvement – about as best as could be imagined from such a design-constrained phone, and in renders only. No doubt Moto Mod fans will be excited to see their investments continue their usefulness.
