Digital photo frames have spent the better part of two decades looking like glowing tablets glued to a wall. SwitchBot's new AI Art Frame 2 goes the other way, pairing a full-color E Ink display with a walnut-colored wood-grain frame, and it's on sale today from $169.99 in three sizes.

What's new

The star of the show is E Ink Spectra 6, a full-color e-paper panel that relies on ambient light rather than a backlight. According to SwitchBot, that gives it a paper-like finish that doesn't glow, and the artwork runs right to the edge instead of sitting inside a traditional white mat.

There are three sizes to pick from: 7.1 inches for a bedside table, 13.3 inches for a shelf or desk, and a 31.5-inch model for anyone after a statement wall. All three are wireless, with a rechargeable battery that SwitchBot says lasts up to three years per charge when the image refreshes once a day.

Why it matters

That battery figure is the bit that caught my eye. A frame that needs a cable has to live near an outlet, which means the socket decides where your art goes before you do, and a multi-year charge lets you hang it wherever it looks best.

SwitchBot is also clearly eyeing the holiday season. Gift Mode lets you scan a QR code on the box and preload photos, artwork, and a message before the recipient unwraps it, and you can keep sending new images remotely once it's set up. It's another step away from the button-pushing bots the brand started with, following the household robots and smart lock it showed off at CES 2025.

Key details

Content can come from three places: a library of 500 curated masterpieces, your own photos and artwork batch-uploaded through the SwitchBot app, or SwitchBot AI Studio. The included 16GB microSD card holds around 5,000 images, according to SwitchBot, and slideshow and schedule modes rotate them for you.

AI Studio can turn photos and kids' drawings into different art styles, create artwork from typed or spoken descriptions, and generate weather-inspired pieces through a feature called Weather Muse. It's a paid subscription, although first-time subscribers get a 30-day free trial, and SwitchBot says features and availability vary by region.

The AI Art Frame 2 is available now through SwitchBot's website and Amazon. Here's what each size costs:

  • 7.1-inch: $169.99 (£179.99/€199.99, CA$219.99)
  • 13.3-inch: $399.99 (£409.99/€429.99, CA$449.99)
  • 31.5-inch: $1,399.99 (£1,599.99/€1,599.99, CA$1,799.99)

Takeaway

On paper, this is one of the more tasteful ways to get family photos onto a wall, and going wireless fixes the biggest headache with smart frames. The 7.1-inch model makes plenty of sense as a gift for parents or grandparents, while the 31.5-inch version is a big ask unless you're set on a feature wall.

Color E Ink has traditionally looked a little more muted than a glossy LCD, and that three-year battery claim depends on how often the image changes, so it'll be worth seeing how both hold up in real-world use. If you've been waiting for a frame that looks like art rather than a tablet on a nail, this is one we can't wait to get on our own walls.
