Samsung is bringing One UI 9 to more Galaxy phones and tablets in Japan, along with Japanese support for Gemini Intelligence's task automation. The update is already rolling out globally in stages, with Samsung's recent Galaxy S and Z flagships first and Galaxy A and M phones following through November.

More importantly, we now have a clearer picture of which devices will get it, since Samsung Japan confirms support for Galaxy models from the Galaxy S23 series onward.

Some Galaxy M, F, and XCover models are also eligible. Samsung recently started the Galaxy M rollout, beginning with the Galaxy M47. The line itself isn't new and was launched in 2019, starting in India, as a line of affordable phones with big batteries sold mainly online.

That aside, One UI 9 is the last major Android update for phones that launched in 2023 with four years of support, including the Galaxy S23 series, Z Fold5, and Z Flip5.

Android 17 for Galaxy is AI-centric

One UI 9 introduces new Galaxy AI features such as My FanCam, which tracks a person you choose in a video and keeps them centered as they move. Also new is Now Nudge’s enhanced capability to read what's on your screen and offer suggestions, like pulling up a reservation while you're making plans in a text thread.

You can now open it from pop-ups and notifications as well as the keyboard. Meanwhile, Now Brief gets custom cards to allow you choose what appears in your daily summary across health, weather, and video.

Creative Studio suggests images for upcoming events, like a card when a friend's birthday is near, while Interpreter adds a Thread View that lets you scroll back through translated conversations. Translations now also play faster through Galaxy Buds, while Mouse Keys adds cursor speed controls, and TalkBack combines Google's and Samsung's screen reader features.

Security features include Security Brief, which adds malware warnings, unknown app alerts, and permission flags to Now Brief. Privacy Alerts use on-device AI to catch apps trying to access permissions in the background, though only on select devices, and Scam Detection for calls now covers Japan, Canada, and India. A feature that detects AI-altered voices on calls is limited to South Korea for now.
