Samsung's newest OLED material is already out in the wild, but the version landing on the iQOO 16 is a new spin on it, and it's a phone most TalkAndroid readers will never hold. At a joint event in Korea on September 14, Samsung Display and iQOO confirmed the upcoming iQOO 16 will ship with a 2K, 165Hz panel built on Samsung's M16 light-emitting material, which iQOO says is the first time that material has been paired with 2K resolution and a 165Hz refresh rate on any phone.

The panel is a 6.85-inch flat OLED running 2K resolution at up to 165Hz, paired with what iQOO calls 2K LEAD 2.0, its label for the combined material and driver-IC package. iQOO says peak brightness hits 2,800 nits and that the panel draws 31% less power at 150 nits than a similarly sized 1.5K display. Those numbers come straight from iQOO's press materials, so treat them as claims until independent reviewers get a unit in hand.
The phone itself is expected to pack a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro, an 8,400mAh battery with 100W wired and 40W wireless charging, and a triple rear camera. iQOO hasn't confirmed a global launch date beyond “later this month” in China.
Why it matters
M16 itself isn't new. The Pixel 11 series launched with M16 panels back in August, and the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max go on sale September 18 with M16 as well. Apple's new iPhone Duo foldable uses an M16-based stack for its inner display too, under a separate three-year exclusive supply deal that covers the foldable-specific engineering, not the material generally. iQOO isn't first to M16. It's first to pair M16 with 2K resolution at 165Hz, which is a narrower claim than the marketing framing suggests, and worth stating that way rather than as “iQOO got there first.”
iQOO's press release leans into that company by association, framing itself alongside Apple and Samsung as a three-way tier of premium display players.
