Sodium Batteries Catch Automakers’ Eyes
Sodium batteries have drawn increasing interest from global carmakers, with many discussing their potential but stopping short of launching actual vehicles. Chinese automaker Changan changed that when it unveiled the Nevo A06, the first production car equipped with a sodium battery. While competitors continue to rely mostly on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) or nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) batteries, the Nevo A06 stands apart as the pioneer in this new wave.
This technology prompts the obvious question: What practical benefits does a sodium battery offer?
Battery Development Accelerates in the EV Boom
The electric vehicle boom has fueled advancements in battery technology. LFP and NMC batteries remain the norm, while some brands are working on solid-state batteries. However, large-scale production of solid-state cells is still considered several years away. In contrast, sodium batteries have already reached the market, moving from idea to implementation.
The Nevo A06: World’s First Car with Sodium Battery
The sodium battery in the Nevo A06 was developed by CATL, a major supplier in the battery industry. While the Nevo A06 itself was introduced earlier, this version features the new sodium-powered system and has garnered attention for that reason.
The car is fitted with CATL’s Naxtra battery, offering a capacity of 45 kWh. According to the Chinese CLTC standard, this provides a range of 400 kilometers—about 249 miles. In testing cycles closer to international standards (like WLTP), the range could be somewhat lower. For its battery class, this range is considered solid. Notably, the sodium battery achieves an energy density of 175 Wh/kg—surpassing the roughly 160 Wh/kg typical of most LFP batteries.
Sodium’s Advantages: Efficiency and Cold-Weather Performance
Sodium batteries deliver on efficiency, thanks to lighter weight and higher energy density, which can translate into less power used per mile. CATL has indicated further development is underway, with hopes of pushing range figures toward 600 kilometers, or roughly 373 miles, in future models.
Performance in extreme cold sets these batteries apart. Initial testing showed sodium batteries could charge and discharge at rates up to three times those of LFP batteries, even down to -30°C (-22°F). The battery maintained 90% of its capacity at -40°C (-40°F) and operated at temperatures as low as -50°C (-58°F) without noticeable issues, according to reports. This could have major implications for customers in very cold climates.
Safety is another key benefit. In test scenarios where the battery was cut or punctured, it continued working without catching fire or emitting smoke. Changan’s other brands—including Deepal and Avatr—are reportedly considering adopting the Naxtra sodium battery in the future.
Repeated safety trials further reported that even when sliced or sawed, the battery neither sparked nor produced smoke, offering reassurance for buyers concerned about accidents or battery damage.
