OnePlus is kicking off the New Year with an official tease for its upcoming R-series handset which is set to be officially unveiled on January 23rd alongside the vanilla OnePlus 12. We've already seen leaked images of the OnePlus 12R and have a good idea on the basic specifications but today OnePlus is giving us a closer look at the ‘groundbreaking' display and the ‘biggest ever' battery of the phone which already promises to be an early contender for affordable flagship of 2024.
The Biggest Battery*
When it comes to battery life it would seem that the OnePlus 12R will go the distance and then some thanks to featuring the largest ever battery ever used by OnePlus. It's 5,500mAh capacity, combined with the reported use of Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, should be more than enough for 2 days of normal usage.
And, when you finally drain the battery all the way down to zero, the OnePlus 12R is claimed in a recent leak to support 100W SuperVOOC fast-charging which should make it a breeze to top the phone up. We are expecting charging times of under 45 mins for a full charge, conservatively. It may be even faster.
OnePlus says that the 12R will also feature its Battery Health Engine technology which will help keep the battery in tip-top shape longer than experienced on rival brands. While OnePlus will give more details on the Battery Health Engine technology during the launch event, we expect it to optimise charging speeds to certain scenarios to reduce heat which will in turn reduce wear and tear on the battery. It could also perhaps limit charging sessions to 80% of the battery capacity.
Cutting-edge Display
Confirming a previous report, OnePlus has revealed that the 12R will exclusively benefit from using the fourth-generation of the LTPO technology which lets a ‘phone switch its refresh rate automatically to make the most of its battery life'. With new 90Hz and 72Hz refresh rates available, the phone display will automatically adjust to what that user is doing, whether that's watching a movie, playing games, or browsing email.
As above, OnePlus says that this LTPO 4.0 technology will be exclusive to the OnePlus 12R which means its sibling will use a different or perhaps older technology. We'll find out for sure during the January 23rd launch event, but it's an interesting move by OnePlus which insists that the each device in the OnePlus 12 series will ‘have their own unique attributes that give users the choice to pick what's important to them'. Both flagship phones are set to be released at the OnePlus Smooth Beyond Belief Launch Event at 19:30 IST on January 23, 2024
Now that OnePlus has confirmed the type of display and the new, increased capacity of the battery that has 500mAh more juice than the OnePlus 11 5G, what are your thoughts on this R-series handset which will launch globally for the first time? Let us know in the comments below.
