As we finish up our review of the Snapdragon-powered Find X5 Pro, OPPO has unveiled the world's first Ray Tracing 3D wallpaper for smartphones during the Game Developers Conference (GDC) which is being held in San Francisco this week. Using the Dimensity 9000-powered version of the Find X5 Pro which is limited to a China-only release (unfortunately), OPPO demonstrated multiple real-time ray tracing wallpapers via an app that is scheduled for release later this year.

In case you are wondering what ray tracing is, it's a graphics rendering technology that ‘simulates the physical behavior of light'. Using this technology enables 3D wallpapers to render light in ‘real-time at usable frame rates, making shadows, reflections, and refractions of objects appear more vivid and life-like. It will also bring users the ability to interact with wallpapers via a selection of hand gestures such as rotating, tapping, and waving.

“As a technology pioneer, OPPO has always actively explored new opportunities to enrich the mobile experience for our users,” said Jane Tian, Head of the Graphics Product Management at the OPPO US Research Center. “The ability to take advantage of ray tracing technology across smartphone devices will bring about more realistic gameplay graphics, for more immersive and competitive gaming. Our 3D wallpaper will also serve as a starting point to using the technology to explore future applications in smart devices.”

Having begun development of the feature back in 2018, OPPO found a way to accelerate ray tracing performance via hybrid architecture and dedicated hardware cores on the version of the Find X5 Pro that is powered by MediaTek's Dimensity 9000 chipset which sports an ARM Mali GPU. OPPO says that it will launch the 3D wallpaper application later this year to the Dimensity-powered Find x5 Pro in APK format and to developers and designs in an SDK package.
