It's taken a surprising length of time considering that most of the world has been under lockdown conditions for almost a year, but WhatsApp is finally adding the ability to make and receive voice and video calls to its desktop apps on Windows and MacOS.

Able to be used in both landscape and portrait orientations, desktop calling will appear in a resizable standalone window on your computer screen and is set to always be on top of whichever browser or window you are using. You'll be happy to note that as on mobile, voice and video calls are encrypted end-to-end to ensure your privacy.

Desktop voice and video calls are starting off with one-to-one chats before grouping voice and video calls are introduced in the future as WhatsApp attempts to shore up its user base after its issues with privacy caused millions of users to jump ship to competing messaging apps such as Signal and Telegram.
