We've heard rumors about a refreshed Google Chromecast that bakes in Android TV and offers a remote, and now it looks more real than ever. Some pretty official renders showcase the device from a few different angles and give us our best look at the remote yet.
New Google Chromecast
This new Chromecast tries to address some of the things that older Chromecast devices didn't quite do well. It's not as simple as previous Chromecasts, although we're assuming it'll still fundamentally work the same if all you want is a streaming gadget to control with your phone.
But now you'll get an actual remote, so guests at your house or someone that's a little less tech savvy can still use it like any other streaming box. That pits the Chromecast against the likes of Roku and Amazon Fire Sticks, but with a much more competitive edge.
The remote also indicates that we'll likely see a full build of Android TV here. That means a big app store for your favorite channels and services, plus cool little shortcuts like the YouTube and Netflix buttons. That raises some questions about Stadia's future on Android TV, but that's a conversation for another time.
Specs under the hood here are rumored to be a quad-core SoC with 2GB of RAM and presumably a bit of internal storage for apps. Chromecasts aren't generally high-end pieces of hardware so don't expect something like the NVIDIA Shield, but there should be enough storage to handle your suite of preferred streaming apps with some headroom. 4K HDR support is also a given.
The only thing we're still curious about is the price. I'd guess this is going to come out to be a bit more than the $60ish price tag of a Chromecast Ultra, but with the cheaper NVIDIA Shield TV coming in at $149 I don't think Google's going to get too crazy.

Steady-on Daniel S, we can’t expect them to give us what is sensible :)
