Netflix: The Rescuer of Canceled Series
Over the years, Netflix has built a reputation for reviving shows abandoned by other networks—think Lucifer, Designated Survivor, The Killing, and even Cobra Kai. In 2022, the streaming giant relieved millions of frustrated fans by stepping in after Manifest was unexpectedly canceled.
The Ups and Downs of Manifest
Manifest debuted on NBC in the United States in 2018, captivating viewers with its unique blend of science fiction and mystery, starring Melissa Roxburgh, Joshua Dallas, and Athena Karkanis. But after just three seasons, NBC canceled it in 2021, leaving the fanbase upset. Many of the story’s biggest questions remained unresolved, with the underlying mysteries nowhere near solved.
Netflix stepped in for one last chapter. In 2022, the platform aired a 20-episode fourth season, split in two parts. The series concluded in June 2023, providing a much more complete ending, though a few plot threads were left unfinished.
The Next Flight: ‘Arrivals'—A Manifest Spin-Off
Now, in a surprising move, Netflix has confirmed the development of Arrivals: A New Manifest Mystery, a spin-off set in the same universe. While Netflix had previously indicated little interest in extending the story, the stance has shifted. The new show is again helmed by creator Jeff Rake, teaming up with long-time producers Margaret Easley and Laura Putney.
According to the first synopsis released this week, the new series will continue Manifest’s style of mysterious storytelling but with new characters. The premise:
When a mysterious plane crashes in Denver, the passengers emerge with no memory of who they are, where they came from, or why they’re there. A young social worker and a rookie Homeland Security agent join forces with the arrivals to stop an apocalyptic disaster—only to realize they’re all part of the riddle they’re trying to solve.
There is no word yet on whether any original cast members will return. Jeff Rake has stated the spin-off aims to balance fan expectations from the earliest Manifest followers while remaining accessible for newcomers.
“We’ve tried to find the right balance to satisfy longtime Manifest fans, but also appeal to new viewers.”
That means viewers can expect nods and references to the original series, but not so many as to alienate those new to the franchise.

According to Rake, the world of Manifest has more stories left to tell. He describes the new project as bold, surprising, deeply human, and full of big ideas, designed to spark conversation long after the credits roll. Both new audiences and loyal Manifest fans are invited to discover Arrivals.
