Samsung's FE line has usually meant a cut-down flagship that trails the rest of the lineup on software. This year it's the opposite: the Galaxy S26 FE is the first phone in the S26 family to ship with One UI 9, ahead of pricier models that launched earlier in the year.

What's new

The camera setup gets a real bump, a 50MP main sensor with OIS, a 12MP ultra-wide, and an 8MP telephoto offering 3x optical zoom and up to 30x digital zoom. My FanCam, the auto-tracking video feature that debuted on Samsung's latest foldables, has been added here too, keeping a chosen subject centered and reframed automatically as a scene moves.

On the AI side, Now Brief adds custom prompt-built briefing cards on top of its existing weather and wellness insights, Now Nudge expands its timely suggestions to more third-party apps, and Circle to Search can now identify multiple items in a single image instead of one at a time. Photo Assist also carries over, letting users edit images with natural-language prompts and step back through changes individually.

Why it matters

Samsung is backing the S26 FE with seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates, the same commitment level as its full-price flagships. That's a meaningful shift for a phone that's historically been treated as the value tier, and it changes the calculus for anyone who buys a phone expecting to keep it a long time.

The Galaxy S26 FE's real story isn't the spec sheet, it's Samsung finally giving its mid-tier flagship the same long-term software commitment as the phones that cost twice as much. For anyone who wants Galaxy AI features without flagship pricing and doesn't want to replace their phone in two years, that's the number that actually matters here.

The Galaxy S26 FE goes on sale from September 4th with pricing starting at $699/£699/€799, depending on your region.
