Tweetcaster, one of the oldest available third-party Twitter apps on the Play Store, has reportedly stopped working. If you've been with us in the Android news sphere for a while, you might remember back in 2012 when tons of Twitter apps started to go down; it doesn't look like this is the same thing, but it's still not great.
Tweetcaster goes down
In 2012 Twitter instituted a limit on how many tokens a third-party Twitter app could use. This meant that once an app hit its limit, no more new users could use it, effectively placing a ceiling on how big any app like that could grow. Tweetcaster has managed to survive for quite some time even past that fiasco, but now something has caught up to them.
The token limit doesn't appear to be the issue, since existing users are also blocked out. Tweetcaster's developer, OneLouder, has been notifying users that things are indeed broken, but it's not their fault, and Twitter actually broke this. Twitter also hasn't told Tweetcaster why things aren't working, so… users are just out of luck. You can try and find the last few remaining good third-party Twitter clients, or just adopt the official Twitter app, which is probably what Twitter wants, anyway.
Not to say that there's anything nefarious going on here, but Twitter does have an easier time serving up ads on its native application. Tweetcaster also seems to be the only third-party Twitter app to have gone down, although there truly aren't that many left to even talk about. Don't panic yet, but if you're still a loyal Tweetcaster user, it might be time to look for a replacement.
