Every summer, there’s that one show on Netflix that manages to define the season. This year, the honor has gone to a Swedish crime thriller that has taken the global stage by storm. But does it measure up, or is this just another summer TV craze?

The Battle for Netflix’s Top Spot

Each year, Netflix delivers a standout series or film that becomes the talk of the season. Last year, it was Kpop Demon Hunters, which made a lasting impression. In 2026, the series that dominated Netflix’s global top spot through much of the summer was from Harlan Coben: Fool Me Once (Sur tes traces in France). As that series’ popularity wanes, likely because most have finished watching, another show has unexpectedly grabbed the spotlight.

For a brief period, the French series GIGN took the crown, stunning with its widespread success. But as interest in GIGN has tapered off, a Swedish contender has created a worldwide sensation. Leading the Netflix charts in France and over a dozen countries, it prompts the questions: Which crime thriller is it, and is all the buzz justified?

Sweden’s Blood Sacrifice Surges Worldwide

Over at Biba, we suspected back in July that the next Swedish Netflix drop had breakout potential—and we weren’t wrong. As of this writing, Blood Sacrifice holds the distinction of being Netflix’s top crime thriller globally. This is no regional quirk: averaging a 2.1 ranking across worldwide charts, Blood Sacrifice has even eclipsed Fool Me Once at its peak.

As of August 25, 2026, data from Flixpatrol showed Blood Sacrifice was number one in 44 countries including Venezuela, Sweden, Spain, Costa Rica, Brazil, and the Netherlands. Its momentum has only increased since debuting on Netflix on August 20. It’s not unusual for Nordic series to go viral, especially when helmed by a director celebrated for work on Black Carb and Lupin. The show’s rapid climb has made it a genuine streaming event.

Plot: Family Ties and a Ruthless Killer

Set in Stockholm during the never-ending daylight of the Nordic summer, the series picks up after the brutal killing of two officers. Jakob Oftebro stars as a veteran detective forced to team up with his estranged, retired-cop father after years of silence. The duo must work against the clock to stop a merciless serial killer preying on local law enforcement. Their complicated family dynamic adds depth to the suspense.

Praise—and Some Criticism—for Blood Sacrifice

Blood Sacrifice is still new, so in-depth reviews are limited. However, viewer feedback on Allociné, a French movie and TV site, highlights both standout strengths and a few notable flaws. Many viewers were hooked from the first episode and finished in a single night, with the finale described as unexpected. Some fans, however, called out the ending as “implausible,” incoherent, or a letdown—suggesting the creators may have prioritized shock value over narrative sense. Still, the widespread praise for its atmosphere and pacing is hard to ignore.
