Dark mode has been slowly creeping up in most of Google's apps. Sometimes we randomly get an update that adds dark mode, but sometimes we just see bits of the UI themed for dark elements without the full blown toggle happening.
Google Maps looks like it's next on the list, but it's taking the latter approach.
This change is interesting, because Google Maps has supported a darker kind of theme for a while; while you're driving, Maps can change to a much darker shade on the navigation screen to keep from blinding you during night drives. So it's pretty odd that it's one of the last apps to hold out without offering a full dark mode on Android 10.
The changes are appearing in the beta version of Maps, where certain pieces of the interface and UI can use dark mode themes. It doesn't look great, obviously, since the full app can't do dark mode, but it does hint at Google working on this behind the scenes.
To top that off, the official Android Instagram account has also uploaded a short video showcasing their apps in dark and light mode. What apps is front and center in that video? Yep, you guessed it: Google Maps.
Is it coming soon? We don't know. Is it coming eventually? Definitely.
