The OnePlus 7 Pro was given an early test drive by WIRED, which might be one of the only examples I've ever seen of a journalist getting to play with a phone's camera before the phone was officially announced. It's weird, but hey, I love creative marketing.

The main point of that test was to show off the zoom capabilities of the now confirmed triple-camera system on the OnePlus 7 Pro, which is intended to be a little more competitive with the flagship offerings from Samsung and Huawei, among others. The regular OnePlus 7 won't be rocking the same setup, so keep that in mind.

The OnePlus 7 Pro will have a 3x optical zoom, which is slightly less than the optical zoom offered by some Huawei phones but a pretty significant step up from previous OnePlus devices, nearly doubling what their other phones have had. Night photography should also be significantly improved.

The phone is also sticking with OnePlus's pretty simple camera interface, and they're not stirring up any hype with AI features that may or may not actually do anything. Some features have even been scaled back, like the portrait mode and bokeh effect, to make it seem more in line with a high-end camera instead of exaggerating the effect just to show that it's there.

And with all of those upgrades, WIRED's test sums up the camera as pretty good, but not a flagship killer. The zoom is nice, but outclassed by other phones. The shutter speed is good, but not as quick as what you'll get from a Pixel. The quality is there, but at the high price point OnePlus will be asking, this phone is dangerously close to the best of the best smartphone cameras.

We'll have to wait for the official announcement and pricing to make any lasting judgments, and that should also give OnePlus time to issue a few patches to perfect the software on the phone. But in the meantime, check out WIRED's article to see the rest of those camera samples.
