A case for a phone that folds twice seems impossible. It would have to bend wherever the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold bends, at two hinges and across three panels, without cracking or slipping off. Case makers solved it by splitting the case into separate pieces. Each panel gets its own shell, and covers wrap the hinges while leaving them free to move.
The TriFold launched in December last year. It unfolds to 159.2 x 214.1 x 3.9 millimeters, closes to 159.2 x 75 x 12.9 millimeters, and weighs 309 grams. Samsung uses Armor Aluminum for the frame, titanium for the hinge housing, and Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 for the 6.5-inch cover screen. The 10-inch inner display only has a factory film. Its IP48 rating survives fresh water, but Samsung’s own footnote says it doesn’t keep out dust or sand. A case keeps grit away from the parts that move.
