Foursquare drops login requirement for use of the app

Foursquare is rolling out an update to their app that removes the requirement for new users to setup up an account or set customizations before they can start searching for places to visit and check out. The move is apparently being taken as a way to make it easier for new users to get recommendations and will then lead to those users wanting to create a new account and link social accounts.

Some of the groundwork to make this possible occurred last year when Foursquare split their app into two separate apps, Foursquare and Swarm. Previous to that change, Foursquare users would “check-in” to their favorite spots and could share them with friends. That meant an account was required for tracking purposes.

The new Foursquare was created to compete more directly with services like Yelp in providing recommendations. Since new users no longer have to create an account, they can immediately access the information stored in Foursquare's databanks. Assuming the app is effective and entices users to continue using it, they can create an account at any time as well as link their social networks.
