So who says HTC and Sprint have to have all of the tablet glory today? Samsung has unveiled two new Tabs, one at 10.1 inches and one at 8.9 inches, and boy are they thin! At 8.6 millimeters (0.34 inches), the two tablets are thinner than anything currently announced. The new iPad 2 as a contrast is 8.8 millimeters (0.35 inches), which granted, isn't that big a difference, but still gives Samsung some bragging rights, considering the boasting that Apple was doing. The devices are also extremely light, with the 10.1 inch weighing in at 595 grams (1.31 pounds) and the 8.9 inch weighing in at 470 grams (1.03 lbs).
Other specs include:
- 3.0 Honeycomb OS with TouchWiz elements
- Dual-core 1 GHz processor
- Samsung Reader & Music Hubs
- built in 16, 32, or 64 Gig variants along with microSD slot
Thus far only GSM builds have been announced, though one would assume that there's probably CDMA versions on their way down the pipeline. This does seem like quite a year for Android tablets and any customer wanting to purchase one will have plenty to choose from. Then again, choice is what Android is all about.

Sure the thickness isn’t that much when comparing the Galaxy Tab to the iPad, but when it comes to Apple thinking they are always the big boss, well, good job Samsung. I’ll just leave it at that! But the Galaxy tablet looks amazing. As soon as the tablet is released, I will definitely be getting my hands on one. After I have one, I will be downloading the DISH Remote Access app. Using my 922 SlingLoaded and this app, I can stream live TV or my recorded shows to my phone or tablet! As a DISH Network customer, I have been using the DISH Remote Access app for a while on my Samsung Galaxy 4G, and I believe that the app will look marvelous on the 10.1 inch screen! Good job Samsung!
I have waited in earnest for the Samsung 8.9″ tablet, and I am EXCITED by what I saw yesterday at the CTIA presentation. Lighter and slimmer than the iPad2; wi-fi only (no need to tie into a carrier ;); micro SD slot; Android 3.0; and dual core processor! That’s EXACTLY what I wanted to read and see. If you’ve spent anytime with the Tab 7.0, you’ll immediately notice the bright screen and responsiveness. I have to believe that the 8.9 will be all of that and more. And for all the naysayers about the Samsung overlay ontop of 3.0, GIVE IT A CHANCE! I’m looking forward to the experience. I am sure by the time the 8.9 is out that there will be tools to root and ROM. As soon as pre-orders become available, I am getting the 8.9! No doubts about it.
^It’s the software that makes the tablet. Not the specs. Windows 7 and Android 2.2 are not what I call the makings of a good tablet experience. the other specs are irrelevant if you’re running second a second rate OS not designed for a tablet.
Already have my tablet – Dell Inspiron Duo, dual boot with full Windows 7 AND Android 2.2! 320GB hard drive, 2GB of memory, and a dual core 1.5GHz processor – all specs NONE of these tablets being released will have!
