Google’s entire Pixel lineup is due for an upgrade this year. If the previous timeline is followed, we could see the Pixel 8a unveiled in May 2024, followed by the Pixel 9 lineup towards the end of the year. An upgrade to the Pixel Fold is also expected to come out at some point.

While some rumored specs and renders of these smartphones are already making rounds on the internet, a new leak now hints towards the Pixel 8a getting a bigger battery.

5000mAh Battery On The Cards For An Upcoming Pixel

Spotted by MySmartPrice, a new Pixel smartphone has appeared on the certification website UL Demko, revealing its battery capacity. As per the listing, the phone would rock a 4,942 mAh battery. Like most other smartphone brands, Google would likely market it as a 5,000 mAh cell.

Could It Be The Pixel 8a?

The certified phone bears the model number GH2MB. The Pixel 7a had a similar model number in some regions–GHL1X. This could mean the unnamed phone might be its successor, the upcoming Pixel 8a.

Besides, the certification suggests the imminent launch of the smartphone. The Pixel 8a will supposedly be Google’s first phone to see the light of day this year, indicating a potential correlation between the two.

If it does turn out to be the Pixel 8a, the battery bump would be quite significant. For comparison, the Pixel 7a had a 4,385 mAh battery, which was just about sufficient for a full day of moderate usage. Even Google's current flagship — the Pixel 8 Pro — gets a 5,050 mAh battery.

The certified smartphone could also be amongst Google’s Pixel 9 lineup, scheduled to launch later this year. Or, it might be the upcoming Pixel Fold 2, given that its predecessor was equipped with a similar 4,821 mAh battery.

The chances of either scenario are pretty slim, as these smartphones are expected to be launched in Q4 of this year, and their model numbers also differ significantly.

Pixel 8a Rumored Specifications

Not much is known about the smartphone currently. The Pixel 8a surfaced on Geekbench a few months back, unveiling a few of its key specs. It could be powered by an underclocked variant of Google’s Tensor G3 chipset, previously seen on the Pixel 8 lineup. Apart from the alleged battery capacity bump, the newer chipset in the Pixel 8a would help it run for an extended duration.

Furthermore, you can expect the phone to feature 8GB of RAM and run Android 14 out of the box. The smartphone's dimensions might also resemble its forerunner, and the display size would remain unchanged.

If another leak from MySmartPrice is accurate, the phone might feature faster 27W charging this year instead of the Pixel 7a’s 18W charging. It would be the cherry on top of the rumored battery upgrade.

Overall, it seems that the Pixel 8a might be including some noteworthy upgrades. We'll hear more about the smartphone as we inch closer to its launch, just a few months away.
