We've been getting a lot of buzz around the Nothing Phone (2a), the first Nothing Phone made with affordability as a big selling point. We've found out a lot about the smartphone, including how it's going to look and what some of the specs are going to be.
However, details around its actual launch date were still uncertain. Well, there's good news and there's bad news. The good news is that we've finally gotten confirmation on when the Nothing Phone (2a) will launch. The bad news: we know one country where it won't get a wide release, and that's the US.
Nothing Phone 2a Launch Date Announced; US Release Will Be Limited
The Nothing Phone (2a) has had a lot of its personality leaked already but the launch date was one thing that managed to stay under wraps. Our best guess was that it was going to launch at MWC 2024 later this month, but based on an interview with Carl Pei, the CEO and co-founder of OnePlus, the device will unveil itself to the world on March 5th at 6:30 AM EST.
While it is great to know when the device is going to launch, it might not really matter if you live in the US. That's because according to a press release, the phone is going to have a limited release, so if you're a regular consumer, you probably won't get it. To be specific, it will only be available through the Nothing US Developer Program. So if you're not an Android developer, the current plan means that you're pretty much out of luck.
Of course, you might be able to go through the route of purchasing the phone from another country and shipping it over or going through local resellers, but that will come with a premium on the price and that sort of beats the point of an affordable Nothing Phone.
More Light On The Nothing Phone 2a Specifications
While the official video posted on Nothing's YouTube channel doesn't say anything about the specifications of the upcoming smartphone, we've gotten some vital information through X tipster Yogesh Brar.
The Nothing Phone (2a) is expected to launch at $400, which undercuts the launch price of the Nothing Phone (2) by $200. We're expecting Nothing OS 2.5 (based on Android 14) to run on a MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Ultra, with a 120 Hz FHD+ 6.7-inch AMOLED display and 45W charging. There should be two cameras on the back: a 50MP primary camera and a 50MP ultrawide. Then, a 32MP shooter for all your selfie needs.
Interestingly enough, based on the interview with Chris Weightman, the industrial designer at Nothing, the Glyph lighting interface may be integrated into the Nothing Phone (2a) in some fashion, but clearly different from the previous devices. Based on the design we saw earlier, we assumed it'd be gone for good, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Nothing Founder Says Other Companies Don't Do Enough With Affordable Phones
The interview makes for a very interesting watch because it allows Carl Pei, the former OnePlus man, to express more of his motivation behind the Nothing smartphones that his company produces. In the process, he takes shots at the way other companies handle non-flagship devices.
Companies like Honor, Samsung, Redmi, Xiaomi, and even OnePlus have shots taken at them for the lazy approaches they take when it comes to budget smartphones. Carl Pei is no stranger to competing with the big kids, so we're going to be excited to see how much value the Phone (2a) brings at its price point.
