If you own a Google Pixel device, the monthly Pixel Drops that arrive with each new season are always exciting. September is no different, with a few features worth paying attention to as the company rolls them out in phases. Go to Settings > System > Software updates or System update and check it out.

Google's new features are for VIPs

As you may already know, Pixel Drops are automatic software updates that Google rolls out to support Pixel devices. They bring new features, visual upgrades, and functional enhancements to your phone over the air.

The latest seasonal update introduces Pixel VIPs, a feature that upgrades your home screen interaction with your most important contacts. New and expanded widget options let you initiate a call or text to your VIP contacts with a single tap straight from your home screen.

The update also introduces glanceable notification badges so you never miss an urgent message, along with a bottom floating menu that lets you switch between your VIPs effortlessly.

Additionally, Google included Harry Potter Audiobook Packs designed to celebrate the release of Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions on Audible. The Full-Cast Audio Editions project is a massive, high-production audiobook co-production between Pottermore Publishing and Audible.

Instead of a traditional single narrator reading the books, these editions feature an ensemble cast of over 200 actors, including prominent names voicing major characters like Hugh Laurie as Dumbledore and Matthew Macfadyen as Voldemort, complete with cinematic Dolby Atmos sound design, original musical scoring, and real-world audio effects.

This customization pack automatically changes your wallpaper, app icons, and system sounds using thematic elements from the audiobooks. All eligible Pixel users also receive a two-month free trial of Audible.

Your keyboard is now more secure than ever

Google has enhanced on-device protection with Scam Detection, which is now built into its proprietary Gboard on Pixel 6 and newer devices in the United States. When you start typing a response to a suspicious message, a “Likely scam” warning chip pops up above your keys. The company assures that processing happens entirely in real time on your device, ensuring your conversations remain private.

Google is also building on its existing scam detection in notifications, which automatically flags suspicious incoming chat warnings before you open them. It's now rolling the safeguard out to a much wider audience. The protection expands to nine new countries: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, Singapore, and the United Kingdom. It also supports six new languages: Arabic, French, German, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish.

Pause Point Expansion is another feature that originally debuted on the Pixel 11 series. It inserts a brief, mindful pause before you open a distracting app of your choice, giving you a moment to decide whether you really want to continue. All features in the Pixel Drop are now expanding to the Pixel 6 and newer devices.

Google is also working hard to squash bugs

Besides the September Pixel Drop, Google has officially published the September 2026 system software update with the global build number CP3A.260905.009. It's rolling out across supported Pixel devices from the Pixel 6 through the Pixel 10 series, plus the Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet.

This release serves as the low-key maintenance package addressing critical system bugs, stability issues, performance drops, and security vulnerabilities. Here is what it improves:
