Ryan Gosling’s Sci-Fi Streak, and His Exit
Following his global success, Ryan Gosling was lined up for another science fiction adventure with Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the Oscar-winning directors known as the Daniels (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”). But after only a few weeks of rumors, Gosling stepped away from the project. Several reports indicate this was likely due to his crowded schedule, with planned work on Star Wars: Starfighter promotional duties and starting Tough Guys with Will Ferrell around the same period filming was to begin in November 2026. Other reporting from The Hollywood Reporter suggested creative differences—Gosling reportedly felt his role was too minor for his involvement.
Matt Damon in Advanced Talks
The Daniels quickly shifted their attention to Matt Damon, another well-known face in space-themed Hollywood fare. Damon starred in Ridley Scott’s adaptation of Andy Weir’s The Martian back in 2016, which was both a critical and commercial success ($630 million worldwide). According to Deadline, Damon entered serious discussions for a lead role in the Daniels’ upcoming, still-untitled film. If their past work hints at what’s to come, audiences can expect a distinctly offbeat sci-fi ride.
Other Names Floated, Story Details Emerge
Hollywood insiders reported that, in addition to Gosling and Damon, other A-listers like Brad Pitt, Keanu Reeves, Oscar Isaac, and Jack Black had all been connected to early discussions. The Hollywood Reporter shared that the story could feature time travel, climate change, and even a possible superhero twist. The plot reportedly unfolds between the present day and the 1980s, centering on a group of teenagers, with Damon set to play one of their fathers. This might explain why the lead roles aren’t intended for stars like Damon or Gosling, but rather for the young ensemble.
