From the Duffer Brothers’ Creative Vault
The Boroughs was produced by Matt and Ross Duffer, best known as the creators of Stranger Things. This project saw them teaming up with Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, known for their work on The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. The Duffer brothers described The Boroughs as “the series we've been dreaming about for a long time.”
Dark Secrets Lurk in Retirement
The story is set in a peaceful retirement community that becomes anything but calm after a grieving newcomer moves in. Residents soon find themselves entangled in a dark secret hidden among them—proof that even later life can be filled with mystery and danger, especially with unexplained forces at work.
Alfred Molina stars as Sam Cooper, a man facing an existential crisis after recently losing his wife. The cast also features Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Denis O’Hare, Clarke Peters, and Bill Pullman. Jena Malone, Seth Numrich, and Dee Wallace round out the impressive lineup, bringing a diverse mix of characters to the screen.
Directors and Episode Structure
The Boroughs consists of eight episodes. Directing duties are handled by Ben Taylor (Sex Education), Augustine Frizzell (Euphoria), and Kyle Patrick Alvarez (The Stanford Prison Experiment), promising both style and compelling storytelling.
The Duffers’ Expanding Universe
Following the conclusion of Stranger Things in 2025, the Duffer brothers stayed busy with several projects. In addition to The Boroughs, they produced Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, a horror series that premiered on March 26, 2026 and was reviewed by Chaos. Fans could also look forward to Tales from '85, the first animated Stranger Things spin-off, which arrived on April 23, 2026.
With so much creative output, the past year has been a treat for anyone who loves thrilling tales and supernatural drama—and a strong reason to stick with Netflix for the foreseeable future.
