Photo editing on your iPhone got an AI-powered upgrade—at least if you use Google Photos in the US. New features powered by Google’s Nano Banana AI model have made photo enhancement smarter and more natural, bringing capabilities far beyond Apple’s default app.
Nano Banana: Smarter editing now on Google Photos for iOS (US only)
As usual, these cutting-edge features rolled out first in the United States. Now, iPhone users who rely on Google Photos have been able to access AI editing tools that let them make advanced changes through written or voice instructions. According to Google’s announcement, these tools offer quick ways to transform your photos: users can request, by speaking or typing, changes like removing window glare from pictures taken through glass, adjusting group selfies so everyone’s eyes are open, removing someone’s sunglasses, or even adding a realistic-looking (but artificial) smile.
Nano Banana, the same AI technology earlier added to Photoshop and Google Search, is now behind these new editing powers on iOS. With natural language requests, you can ask Google Photos to turn your picture into something entirely different, like a Renaissance-style painting, a mosaic, or to tweak specific details such as clothing color or hairstyle.
Smart templates: Effortless personalizations
Google said it hasn’t stopped there. The company also announced that templates—smart collections that automatically edit photos using preset styles—would be coming to the app. One example Google shared: a template called “put me in a high fashion photoshoot.” Upload photos of yourself into this collection, and Nano Banana creates images of you dressed in imagined high-fashion outfits, posed against creative, generated backgrounds.
What’s next for Android, iPhone, and beyond?
According to Google, the smart template feature was slated to launch first on Android, with plans for possible later availability on iOS. Whether these AI-driven capabilities will reach users in Europe or elsewhere remains unconfirmed. For now, US iPhone users with Google Photos have enjoyed a serious upgrade to their photo editing toolkit, with Google signaling more smart tools are on the way.
