MediaTek’s Dimensity range of chipsets has been quite successful for the company and has helped it gain wider acceptance from both smartphone users and manufacturers. The Taiwanese semiconductor giant has extended its Dimensity series by announcing two new SoCs today, the Dimensity 7300 and Dimensity 7300X.
Both these chipsets pack in some upgrades and offer improved performance. However, it's the latter that’s more exciting. The Dimensity 7300X brings support for dual displays on smartphones, meaning we could see more affordable foldables hitting the market soon.
Dimensity 7300 and Dimensity 7300X
MediaTek has just announced two new chipsets for mid-range smartphones: the Dimensity 7300 and Dimensity 7300X. The chips see improvement in performance, power efficiency, photography, and, of course, AI. Both the Dimensity 7300 and 7300X boast similar specifications, with just one major difference: the Dimensity 7300X brings support for dual displays on smartphones.
In terms of specifications, the 7300 duo features an octa-core CPU with four Cortex-A78 cores clocked at a maximum of 2.5 GHz, as well as four slower Cortex-A55 cores. The chips are made on TSMC’s 4nm process, ensuring lesser power consumption for mid-range smartphones. They support either LPDDR4x or LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage.
Both the chipsets are paired with the Arm Mali-G615 GPU for your gaming needs. MediaTek says the 7300 family offers 20% faster FPS and improved energy efficiency over “competitor alternatives,” though we aren't sure what chipsets it's referring to.
Enhancements in Camera and Display Quality, AI, and More
The 7300 family offers support for a 200MP primary camera, with a 12-bit HDR-ISP and MediaTek's Imagiq tech for better image quality. For videos, the chips offer 4K HDR recording with a 50% wider dynamic range, again compared to some “competitor solutions.” Courtesy of the MediaTek APU 655, the Dimensity 7300 and Dimensity 7300X also offer improved AI task efficiency with twice the performance of MediaTek’s own Dimensity 7050 SoC. Connectivity options include Dual 5G SIM support with dual VoNR, tri-band Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.4.
Both the Dimensity 7300 chipsets offer better display support, thanks to MediaTek’s MiraVision 955 tech. Phones running these chips will enjoy support for 10-bit HDR displays, with a 120 Hz refresh rate at WFHD+ resolution, and 144 Hz at Full HD+. The only thing that sets the Dimensity 7300 and 7300X apart is that the 7300X gets dedicated support for dual-display flip phones.
The Dimensity 7300X Could Pave the Way For Cheaper Foldable Smartphones
Thanks to the dual-display support, the Dimensity 7300X could lead to smartphone brands offering quality foldable smartphones with competitive features at affordable prices. The Nubia Flip launched last month surprised everyone with its $500 price tag. Shortly thereafter, we saw the Blackview Hero 10, priced even lower at $425.
With the Dimensity 7300X now, we could soon see more clamshell foldables in this price bracket, with even better features (at least we hope so!). Could this lead to a new wave of affordable foldable smartphones?
