After mysteriously delaying its launch last week to a day after Samsung's Unpacked event, Motorola has officially unveiled the Moto Razr 2022 which is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor and packs in a bunch of design tweaks, including the loss of the ‘chin'. At first glance, the Moto Razr 2022 would appear to be a worthy competitor to Samsung's new Galaxy Z Flip 4 but there's currently a fly in the ointment with there being no word on when or if the new clamshell will go on sale in the US.
The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor is bolstered by up to 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB of built-in storage, and the 3,500mAh battery supports 33W wired charging, which is a little faster than the 25W offered on the Galaxy Z Flip 4. In terms of software, it's running Android 12 out of the box although Motorola hasn't yet revealed the level of support the Moto Razr 2022 will receive.
The internal OLED display is 6.67-inches big and offers FHD+ resolution and a speedy 144Hz refresh rate while at 2.7-inches the cover AMOLED display is larger than on previous models and has a 800 x 573 resolution. The cover display is now able to show up to nine widget panels that carry information on weather, fitness goals, notifications, calls, and even the camera.
Design-wise, the Moto Razr 2022 takes after the Galaxy Flip rather than previous Razr models, but it's still a good-looking device and in my opinion, looks more appealing than Samsung's foldable.
Much like the FlexCam feature on Samsung's foldables, the Moto Razr 2022 has Flex View which lets the phone be used as its own mount, letting you take selfies, videos and video calls totally hands-free. Speaking of cameras, there's a 50MP main rear camera and a 13MP sensor that pulls double duty as the ultra-wide and macro camera. The 32MP selfie camera is located in a central punch-hole on the internal display.
For the moment at least, the Moto Razr 2022 is only available in China and priced from CNY 5,999 (~$890), which is pretty reasonable considering the hardware. There's no word on if Motorola plans to launch its new clamshell in the US but hopefully the brand will be more forthcoming on its release strategy in the weeks ahead.
