Have we ever had a Google Pixel phone without some kind of controversy? I don't think so.
This time around, it looks like we might have some manufacturing issues with the Google Pixel 5, and some users are reporting gaps between the display and screen of their brand new phone. Uh oh.
Google Pixel 5 display gaps
So apparently what's happening is the glue or manufacturing of the phone itself is causing the display to come away from the body of the device, particularly around the front-facing camera. It's almost like what a phone looks like if a battery swells, if you've ever seen that happen, but that obviously should not be a problem with a brand new phone straight out of the box.

This is definitely problematic for a phone that just launched. The issue doesn't seem too common, but the phone being so new probably has a lot to do with that. If this was a phone selling as much as, say, a Galaxy S10, this would be making some very loud headlines.
The bright side to that is that since it's small and seemingly self-contained still, it gives Google time to jump on top of the problem and fix it before it turns into anything else. This kind of issue could end up being very serious, especially if it affects the phone's waterproofing and dust resistance.
If you want to see a few more images of the afflicted devices, Android Police is cataloging some of the early damage. And if you personally have a Pixel 5 with a screen that's separating, we'd love to hear about it!

I’ve had all Google phones from Nexus 5 through Pixel 4XL except for 3XL. Could not handle that forehead notch thing. But as I look back, even though I’m 100% in with Google’s version of Android, quick updates and great pictures, I’m kind of done with all the BS that comes with them. I’ve had to send my P4XL in to be repaired twice since March. The last time, it took 3 weeks to even get an RMA to send the phone in. Yes, Covid and reduced customer support but still, I don’t think there’s any way I’ll be looking at a P5. It’s going backwards from the P4XL in too many ways. I don’t need 5G. I could really use WiFi 6. I don’t want a smaller, slower phone. I’ll have to see where the P6 goes but in the meantime, if I need to get a new phone, I think OnePlus will get the business.
