After being the first brand to show off an under-display selfie camera, Vivo has taken to social media to reveal a phone sporting a rear panel with color-changing technology. This isn't one of those finishes that changes color when you change the angle you are looking at it, it actually changes color right in front of you with no movement of the phone, or yourself, at all.
The technology uses electrochromic glass which is usually used for windows and skylights in buildings, but which now turns the rear panel from deep purple to silver. It's mesmerizing stuff, and with gradient designs coming to the end of their shelf life, the electrochromic glass could be a sign of things to come in the world of smartphone design.
This is just a prototype from Vivo right now and likely not something we are going to see released into the wild during what's left of 2020. There are questions over the technology's durability, weight, and costs, which may make it too expensive for a mainstream handset. But if Vivo gets all of its ducks in a row, it may mean that deciding between two colors on a smartphone becomes easier than ever before, because you may soon be able to have both options on the same phone.
Is Vivo's color-changing technology something you would like to see on your next smartphone?
