WhatsApp is reportedly planning on launching a new feature that would make it a much more viable service for using across devices. Currently there's no way to use your linked phone number across several devices (you can do the opposite and utilize two numbers on one device, like for dual-SIM business phone) which is a big limitation for someone that potentially has two phones for work or just spares laying around.

That's supposedly changing soon, however; a new rumor suggests that WhatsApp is working on cross-device functionality that's happening sooner rather than later.

WhatsApp on multiple devices

This would be a pretty significant upgrade. As we mentioned earlier, many people have two phones, whether that's for personal and business or just two phones as a hobby. The current limitation also applies to tablets, which is a major inconvenience when you can't share your number across you personal phone and a WiFi tablet. That's definitely not uncommon.

The latest beta WhatsApp APK hints at using the messaging app across multiple devices. There are strings and messages for adding secondary devices, and an entirely new section of settings for linked devices, which we're presuming means other phones and tablets aside from your primary device.

However, it does look like there's a catch here. Some early screenshots of that section hints at a limit of four devices, and it seems like it includes browsers and computers, too. That's not a huge amount of devices, and if you're including all of the browsers that someone uses I think it could be pretty easy to hit that ceiling fast.

Once again, this feature is clearly in beta, so things can change if/when it actually launches. The device limit may go away, and things might work a little differently than we're guessing.

Keep your eyes out.
