If you're like me, persistent notifications are probably one of the few faults you have with Android's notification shade. I understand Google's reasoning behind them (you want to be aware of an app constantly running in the background) but come on, I want a clean notification shade.
Android 11 looks like it's going to fix this, and it's already rolled out with developer preview 3.
Dismiss persistent notifications in Android 11
It works just like you'd expect. If you have a persistent notification from something like a password manager, for instance, you can swipe it away with the rest of your notifications. On current builds of Android, it's impossible to dismiss it. Some apps support removing it for you, but not all of them.
If you accidentally clear something that you do want to remain in your status bar, you can easily retrieve it in the notification history that was introduced with the last developer preview. And there's still a quick little warning at the bottom of your notification shade that lets you know how many apps are running in the background, so this won't be an excuse for certain apps to hide and run rampant while you're not paying attention.
This is a cool feature, but as of right now it's just in the developer preview. Let's hope it works out and is stable enough for the full launch of Android 11 later this year.
