When it comes to messaging apps, privacy is something that many of us are getting increasingly concerned about, especially in the age of Zoom. With that in mind, Viber will soon allow its 1 billion users to control their own data in the form of disappearing messages in regular chats.
Previously only available in secret chats, Viber's new disappearing messages feature will let users set a timer for sending a text, photo, video or another type of files for periods of a few seconds, minutes, hours, or even days before the message disappears. The countdown starts automatically once the recipient sees the message you've sent them.
To create a disappearing message, a user needs to:
- Tap the clock icon on the bottom of the chat and select the disappearance period for the message.
- Type and send a message to the recipient.
“We are proud to announce the disappearing messages feature launching in all 1-on-1 chats. Introduced by Viber in 2017 as part of the “secret” chats experience, over time we became convinced that a similar measure of ensuring confidentiality, including sending a notification when the recipient takes a screenshot of the disappearing message, should be added to regular chats. This marks another step in our journey towards being the safest messaging platform in the world,” said Ofir Eyal, COO of Viber.”
The ‘disappearing messages' feature will roll-out worldwide at the beginning of May, so keep an eye out for an update to the Viber app in the Play Store in the coming weeks. If you haven't downloaded the messaging app yet, you can do so via the Play Store link below.
