Digital Wellbeing controls on smartphones is a good thing. It helps you control how much time you're spending looking down at your favorite screen and can keep you aware of just how much time you're wasting on social media or playing games.
But Android TV feels like it should have this feature, too. After all, we spend quite a bit of time in front of the TV watching Netflix, playing games, or anything else that you can do with an Android TV box. That's where this new app comes in.
App Usage for Android TV, which is available on the Play Store, promises to tackle this problem before Google does. It adds digital wellbeing controls and screen time limits to apps on your Android TV, which means you can set a hard limit for how often you can watch Netflix or YouTube on your TV. While the app could certainly use a better name, it seems pretty well polished for what it's trying to do.
You can get a clear view of your daily/weekly viewing habits, set limits for those apps, and exclude certain apps if you don't want to track them, like with a weather app or something. It feels like something that should already be integrated into Android TV natively, even though it's not.
The app is free to test out to make sure it works with your particular flavor of Android TV, and an in-app purchase of $5 unlocks the screen time feature.
