My Brilliant Career: A Classic Reimagined for a New Generation

A new mini-series became available on Netflix on Thursday, August 13, 2026, and it has quickly won over audiences seeking the perfect binge for a long summer afternoon or a hot night in. Titled My Brilliant Career and helmed by Liz Doran (Please Like Me), this latest release is a fresh adaptation of Miles Franklin’s celebrated 1901 novel—a story previously brought to film in 1979.

A Headstrong Heroine’s Story Resonates Over a Century Later

The series follows Sybylla Melvyn, a passionate young Australian woman in the early 1900s who dreams of becoming a writer, while her family and society expect her to settle for marriage. She’s sent to her grandmother’s home, ostensibly to find a suitable husband, but Sybylla is determined to hold on to her independence and pursue her calling. When love enters the picture—especially in the form of Harry Beecham—her resolve is put to the test.

This unflinchingly feminist story is brought to life by a cast that includes Philippa Northeast (The Newsreader), Christopher Chung (Slow Horses), Sherry-Lee Watson (Harley, coeurs à vif), and Jake Dunn (Renegade Nell).

I read the book for the first time in 2019, and I was immediately struck by how Sybylla’s struggle still resonates with us today. Having the chance to share this story with a new generation—one that encourages them to pursue their dreams—was an opportunity I simply couldn’t pass up.

Period Drama With Fresh Flair

With just six episodes, My Brilliant Career appeals to fans of period dramas such as Bridgerton or The Buccaneers. The series boasts lavish costumes and stunning Australian backdrops, but it is not just another stately adaptation. Doran’s version injects the classic tale with modern touches, from a pop and rock soundtrack to a playful sense of humor.

Expanded Worlds, New Representation

The creative team has also broadened the narrative, merging two characters and introducing new ones, including First Nations characters, to expand the universe of Franklin’s original story. As Doran explained:

The most important changes we made were about broadening the world of the story to include a greater variety of characters. The book is very free in its structure, which gives it a distinct freshness and vitality, but naturally, it leaves out stories it doesn’t tell—especially ones we need today. Bringing in First Nations characters was essential for this. (…) Franklin’s book is original, bold, and strikingly modern for its time. I hope we’ve honored the spirit of the original work by exploring it from a contemporary point of view.

With a perfect 100% average on Rotten Tomatoes and a rapid ascent into Netflix’s Top 10 most-watched series—reportedly in less than 24 hours—My Brilliant Career has become a streaming standout for late summer 2026.
