Autofilling verification codes can be kind of a pain. Smartphones have made strides in the last couple years to make that an easier experience, including Android Messages letting you copy the code right from a notification, or letting apps use a certain API to automatically retrieve those codes without you needing to switch.
But now Google is taking that a step further and cooking up an autofill service that's included in Play Services, which should mean all Android phones should be able to have that automatic autofill with way fewer steps.
Once you get the latest Play Services update and the feature is turned on server-side, you'll be able to turn on SMS verification autofill and Android should automatically grab those codes whether or not the app uses the messaging API. Unfortunately, according to XDA Developers it looks like Google's implementation does need a little more extra stuff in the SMS message so autofill can properly grab and associate those correct codes, but fingers crossed this still makes the experience a little bit better for Android users.
I already have this feature on my banking apps
