Aircela: Turning Air Into Fuel
Despite the rapid rise of electric cars worldwide, more than 90% of vehicles still run on gasoline, and truly viable alternatives remain scarce. The recent conflict in Iran has underscored how dependent we are on fossil fuels as global fuel prices have risen sharply. Now, Aircela, a New York-based company, is aiming to change that dependency—and they have already revealed a working solution.
In 2025, Aircela demonstrated a machine capable of producing around 4 liters (about 1 gallon) of gasoline per day from the air—without using petroleum and reportedly without significant pollution. This isn’t just a promise: the startup has proven their concept in public demonstrations.
How the Aircela Machine Works
Roughly the size of a refrigerator, Aircela's machine is designed for practical, in-home or on-site use. It draws in ambient air through a specialized filter containing hydroxide and potassium to capture carbon dioxide. Using solar energy, the machine splits water molecules via electrolysis to create hydrogen. The captured carbon dioxide and the generated hydrogen are then combined in an internal reactor. A catalyst converts these components into methanol, then further into gasoline.
What comes out is fuel that is chemically identical to what you buy at the pump. Importantly, this gasoline is fully compatible with all traditional combustion engines, so there’s no need to modify existing vehicles. This technology could allow drivers—even in isolated areas—to generate their own fuel on-site.
Eric and Mia Dahlgren, who spearheaded the project, drew on the pioneering research of physicist Klaus Lackner, an early leader in the field of direct air CO2 capture. The advantage: existing fuel distribution networks or vehicle designs wouldn’t need to change—all that’s required is the machine itself, which can output about 1 gallon (4 liters) of gasoline each day.
Testing and What’s Ahead
By July 2026, Aircela’s prototype was undergoing tests in Los Angeles. If commercialized, this device could give consumers access to carbon-neutral gasoline, while letting them keep using their current vehicles. No official retail price has been announced yet, but reports indicate that early versions may be priced between €14,000 and €18,500 (approximately $15,200 to $20,200 at recent rates). Until the machine officially launches, it remains an inspiring development to watch.
As a related note, Airbus has also developed a new alternative jet fuel called “Rebound,” produced from sugar beets, and is building a plant in France with a major alcohol and sugar company. The field of renewable fuels is heating up on multiple fronts.
