Status just handed the tuning reins on its flagship earbuds to one of the most trusted names in headphone reviewing. The Status Pro X GoldenSound Edition pairs the company's Hybrid Triple Driver hardware with a custom sound profile from Cameron Oatley, the reviewer and engineer behind the GoldenSound channel, and it's up for pre-order now at $279.

What's New

The GoldenSound Edition builds on the newly announced Status Pro X rather than replacing it. It keeps the same 12mm dynamic driver and dual Knowles balanced armature setup, but Oatley has applied his own tuning curve on top, aiming for a flatter, more neutral response instead of the bass-forward signature a lot of consumer earbuds lean on.

The edition also gets its own look. A gold and black metal-plated chassis sets it apart from the standard Pro X, and the shell itself is 21% smaller than Status's previous generation for a lower profile against the ear.

Why It Matters

Status is positioning this as more than a cosmetic bundle. Bringing in a reviewer known for measurement-driven tuning signals an attempt to push the Pro X toward true wireless in-ear monitor territory, not just consumer earbud tuning.

“Built upon extensive research and understanding of how the human ear affects real-world sound, and made possible by Status' hardware and processing, the Pro X GoldenSound Reference Edition are tuned to disappear and leave nothing between you and the music,” Oatley said.

For a company competing against Bose, Sony, and Sennheiser on sound quality claims, having a name like GoldenSound attached is a credibility play as much as a product one.

The GoldenSound Edition carries over the full Pro X feature set:

High-Res Audio certification from the Japan Audio Society, with LDAC and LC3 codec support. Enhanced Hybrid ANC alongside an adjustable transparency mode. A three-microphone beamforming setup for call clarity, which Status calls Voiceloom AI Speech Enhancement. Bluetooth 5.3 with Auracast, LE Audio, and Multipoint Connectivity.

Takeaway

Pre-orders for the Status Pro X GoldenSound Edition are open now at status.co, priced at $279 with shipping expected in early September. If you've been eyeing the standard Pro X, this is the version to watch for an early read on whether the hardware can back up the tuning pedigree attached to it.
