Samsung hasn't had a huge IFA 2019 (they rarely do) but they did talk about the relaunch of the Galaxy Fold. Aside from that, they've been pretty quiet. The might take home the award for weirdest announcement after this one, though.
A new feature called SoftPOS aims to turn your Samsung smartphone or tablet into a Square card reader alternative.
SoftPOS, which stands for Software Point of Sale, essentially will allow you to take payments with a contactless card, right from your smartphone. Yep, that's a full cash register in your pocket.
Obviously you'll only be able to take payments from credit cards with contactless chips, or a smartphone that can do Samsung Pay/Google Pay/Apple Pay/etc. Wearables and things will work, too.
That's going to be a strange concept for customers in the US who don't have ubiquitous contactless payments, but in Europe it's a much, much more common feature. It could also seriously put a dent in Square's market, and adds yet another bullet point to the list of things that a Samsung phone can do.
