Android Auto is designed to minimize your distractions while driving, and it blocks a good chunk of notifications from your phone, excluding notifications from whitelisted apps. That whitelist is a pretty short list, and usually just covers things like SMS messages, navigation alerts, and other similar notifications relevant to driving.
Google Voice was not included in that white list, though. Kind of surprising, since it's technically an SMS and voice call client, but we all know how Google feels about their old projects.
But now, completely out of nowhere, Google has updated Android Auto to support Google Voice notifications. You'll be able to be read your incoming messages, and you can reply to those messages with your voice, but not everything works. You can't send a new text like this, since Android Auto will simply tell you “I can't send Google Voice messages.” That's probably because Google Assistant doesn't really work with Google Voice, which is a complaint for another time.

So if you do use Google Voice and have Android Auto in your car, you're getting a little more functionality today. And if you're wondering how Google had time to do this but not keep Inbox around, yeah, I can understand that frustration, too.
