It's no secret that when it comes to messaging apps, Google isn't known for having a cohesive strategy, seemingly announcing new apps at every possible chance. Now the search giant is cleaning up its act, and the Allo smart messaging app is the first service to be shut down. After announcing the closure of its Allo app back in December, today is its last day of operation which means you might want to save your favorite Allo chats before the service shuts down later today.
You'll need to follow these steps to save your Allo chats for posterity:
- On your Android phone, open Allo.
- Go to Menu, then Settings.
- Tap Chat.
- Select an option:
- Export messages from chats: This only includes message text, not photos or videos
- Export stored media from chats: This includes photos, videos, and other files.
- To store them, choose where you’d like to store the file.
- Your messages will be in a CSV file.
- Your media attachments will be in a zip file.
If you aren't transitioning over to Android Messages, let us know in the comments below which messaging app you are heading to once Allo is shut down later today.

Trying to transition the family to using telegram. But it was like pulling teeth to get everyone to start using Allo! We all tried to just use MMS but with the lack of a true group chat it quickly devolved into SMS/MMS hell. Id use facebook messenger because EVERYONE has it. But I refuse to use any Facebook products because they have made it clear they cant be trusted. So were going to try out this telegram thing and see how it goes. But Google is royally f*cking up lately in killing off some of their most used products.
I share your pain re Facebook products. Back before they bought it, I got everyone on to WhatsApp, moving them to something else just isn’t going to happen unless something better comes along..
