Google Allo was pretty bad. It launched with a serious lack of features and was an answer to a problem that no one really had. It also perfectly exemplified Google's ridiculously confusing messaging app strategy, so it's only fitting that it'll go out with a whimper from Google's congested portfolio.
Google will be dropping Allo beginning March 2019, although the timing was pushed back because they literally just announced that Hangouts will be going away, too. That hasn't really set well with fans of the chat service, although I'm pretty sure most of us would've been much less bummed about Allo going first instead of Hangouts.
Sunsetting the product comes not long after Google moved most of Allo's team to work on Android Messages, and the lack of attention has certainly shown in the bugs and general rough experience in Allo lately.
This move will also coincide with Google moving away from Hangouts as well, and putting all of their effort into making RCS messaging their single focused experience across devices. That's (probably) good news, assuming Google can actually focus on this and get everyone else on board. But for the few of you that are still using Google Allo, well, better get ready to migrate in the next couple months.
At least Duo is doing pretty well.

It’s stupid to get rid of things before there is a long term and ready viable alternative. At least keep Google Hangouts. Are they trying to drive us away to whatsapp?!
I just uninstalled Allo.
And because I have no ideas whats supposed to “replace” it in the Google chat ecosystem, and I DON’T HAVE ANY CONFIDENCE IN THEIR ABILITY TO MAKE A CONSISTENT APP in that area, I installed Whatsapp.
This has got to be Googles biggest joke… They just cant get messaging right.
