T-Mobile was the first major carriers to completely ditch two year contracts for its customers and introduce more transparent installment plans, and it's going to be the first to shake up that industry standard one more time. A new leak suggests that we can expect some serious changes to T-Mobile's installment billing in the later half of this year.
Currently, installment plans set customers on a pretty strict schedule of paying off a phone while being able to turn it back in and upgrade at specific intervals. If you've upgraded with a major carrier in the past couple years, you know the drill.
But T-Mobile thinks that's getting stagnant and it's time to do something new. Details are scarce on their new program, but it will likely bundle your phone payment, a lifetime warranty, and insurance all into one payment. This means you'll be free to trade in and upgrade the phone whenever you want and you won't have to worry about how much you've paid off or when your upgrade date is, but it might also mean that prices will go up a bit more than where they're currently at. Insurance isn't free, after all.
Again, there really aren't many solid details about this new program aside from it being simpler and it launching sometime later this year. Until then, we'll just have to speculate.
