With Samsung in the middle of one doozy of a global recall for its recently released, much vaunted but potentially explosive Galaxy Note 7, we have some news about the Korean handset maker's Next Big Thing. That's right, it may only be mid-September but the scuttlebutt regarding the Galaxy S8 has already begun leaking. Today's leak reveals the various code names for the Galaxy S8 and the story behind its model numbers.

As expected, there appears to be two versions of the Galaxy S8, which, according to SamMobile, are known as Dream and Dream2 within the development teams. The Dream has model number SM-G950 while the Dream 2 has model number SM-G955. There is some mystique and superstition behind the reason to skip the model numbers SM-G940 and SM-G945 in that the number 4 is considered unlucky in South Korea, much like the number 8 is considered to bring good fortune in China. It isn't the first time Samsung have done this with model numbers, the Galaxy S4 should have been GT-I9400, but was instead bumped to GT-I9500.

It was recently alleged that the Galaxy S8 would only be available in a curved variant, but for the moment at least, it appears that two models are in development. As for when it launches, I would wager the Galaxy S8 will still launch at MWC early next year, but that stock will be available to order within a couple of weeks of the announcement. While a hefty pinch of salt is required with leaks and rumors, it's almost certain that the Galaxy S8's launch date will be affected by the Galaxy Note 7's recall as Samsung attempts to rebuild its damaged brand image.

I have a feeling that our Jeff Causey will expand a little on the idea of the Galaxy S8 launching early later today, so keep your eyes peeled.
