Alex Wiesen, a lead manager with Google's Google Voice team, announced today that MMS support within Google Voice is now live for almost 100 North American based carriers. To the dismay of many people, the list of carriers that gave the go ahead to roll out this update does not include Verizon. Customers on AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile in the U.S. as well as Rogers, Bell Canada and Telus in Canada will have this new option available to them.

Google has not released a list of carriers getting this new integration, so we only know about the carriers listed above at this point. We also do not know whether an update to the Google Voice app, or Hangouts, is required to access this new functionality.

Support for MMS means users can now receive pictures using Google Voice. As Alex Wiesen noted in his announcement, users will no longer have to worry about fomo, the fear of missing out. Along with sharing media like pictures, the MMS support for group messages is limited to appearing as individual messages from a single individual. Another project manager with the Google Voice and Hangouts team, Mayur Kamat, indicates the team is still working on the group MMS functionality.

  1. Am confused… as far as I knew Google Voice wasn’t available in Canada; when you mention Canadian carriers, is it only in reference to them being able to receive and respond to Google Voice MMS messages?

    1. I’m not sure. Wiesman was asked a similiar question about how this works given Voice’s lack of availability in Canada, but had not yet responded.
