In October of 2013, news broke that Amazon and HTC were penning a deal that allowed the Taiwanese company to make a budget Amazon smartphone. It would have been a deal that showed that HTC had a new momentum and allowed for another revenue stream. It also would have given Amazon an in on the low-end smartphone market. However the deal fizzled out. According to a source close to The Information, it's because AT&T had objections.

According to the source, AT&T objected to the fact that it would not have US exclusivity of the HTC made Amazon phone. As such, the carrier threatened to not carry the high-end Fire phone causing Amazon to just scrape the project entirely. Given the current state of how well the Fire phone is doing, HTC may have avoided a disaster. While none of the companies are commenting, this rumor could be likely given AT&T's previous grabs of HTC exclusives. Anyone remember the HTC Status?
