Earlier today we reported on a leaked image that appears to reveal the Samsung Galaxy S5 will come equipped with a 16MP camera. To help make pictures even better, Samsung will also be using some new LED flash components designed for mobile devices, with the Galaxy S5 leading the way. Samsung unveiled several new components including two reflector-integrated flash LED packages, a flip-chip flash LED, and two side-view LEDs. The components are geared to high-end devices with powerful cameras trying to capture a wide field of view.
Samsung is planning to showcase the new LEDs at MWC 2014 next week. In particular, they note that one of the reflector-integrated flash LEDs “will be used in the next Galaxy smartphone, which is expected to be introduced later this month.” With the pending announcement of the Galaxy S5 taking place next week during the last few days of February, that is surely the device Samsung is referring to as the next Galaxy smartphone. Samsung indicates they will start mass production of the new LEDs in March, so they should start to show up in actual products sometime during the second quarter.
As part of their announcement, Samsung also indicates their new standard flash LED will utilize a new, proprietary cell-film phosphor technology that uses a thin film of phosphor on each package instead of applying the phosphor on each chip. Samsung says this will improve the level of color quality for traditional LED packages.
